Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows is an operating system for computers. Microsoft is the company and Windows group name for the various versions of operating systems that the company offers. An operating system is the platform for the computer. It makes it possible for the various software programs to function.
An operating system can be described like a power source. You have power coming into your home through the electrical supply. The electricity itself cannot bake a cake. In order to perform a task like baking a cake you will need several appliances that use the electricity. You will need a refrigerator to keep the milk, butter and eggs at a safe temperature until you are ready to use them. You will need a mixer to combine all of the ingredients. You will need an oven to provide the heat to bake the mixture. And it would be nice to have a dishwasher to help with cleanup. This is an overly simplified example, but it helps to demonstrate the difference between an operating system like Windows and software like Office.
An operating system can also be viewed in terms of security. Just like in a home or business, steps are taken to protect the people and property inside. Doors are locked. Alarms are set. Security guards are posted in key locations. Monitoring devices are used. For example, if the business is a bank, the cameras, the alarm panic buttons, the security guards really have nothing to do with the core business of banking. But in a society were safety is a concern, they are necessary for employees and customers to be willing to enter the building.
Another comparison from the business world is the role of a director of operations. This person is in charge of all the stuff that must take place in order for the company to do the work it does. This is the person who makes sure the building is safe and well-maintained. This is the person who makes sure the copiers work, the air-conditioning works, the phone system is up-to-date. This is the person who creates an environment where the function of the company can thrive.
Over the years that Microsoft has been in business, they have frequently launched new versions of the Windows operating system. Each version offers new, enhances features to make productivity and security better. The latest Windows operating system is Windows Vista. New computers that feature Microsoft components will be pre-loaded with Vista. For existing computers, IT professionals and individual owners will likely keep the operating system they already have. The systems will be compatible in most cases. When the company or person is ready to buy a new computer, they will make the change over to Windows Vista.
Windows Vista offers improved Internet experience with the ability to browse multiple pages at the same time from a single window. A Quick Tabs feature will allow you to see thumbnail views of webpages before you open them. Users can set controls to regulate when the computer can be used and what access the different users can have. This is a great way to control a computer used by the entire family.
